1972年2月14日發現于西非塞拉里昂的科諾地區河流沖積砂礦中，重量為968.90ct，晶形不完整，呈雞蛋狀，無色透明，屬優質寶石級金剛石。1972年6月30日在倫敦DeBeers的中央統售機構，曾對“塞拉里昂之星”金剛石進行估價，其結論是不低于100萬英磅。
經過精心設計“塞拉里昂之星”金剛石被切割、加工和琢磨成17塊鉆石，分別被命名為Star of Sierra Leone-1---- Star of
Sierra Leone-17總重量為238.48克拉。

塞拉里昂之星按重量來算，僅次于“庫利南”和，“愛克賽西奧”金剛石，是世界第三大寶石級金剛石，按產狀，“庫利南”和“愛克賽西奧”金剛石產于金伯利巖型金剛石原生礦中，而“塞拉里昂之星”金剛石則產于河流沖積砂礦中。是迄今從砂礦中發現的世界最大寶石級金剛石。1988年10月在紐約鉆石市場，Star
of Sierra Leone-2 鉆石以352萬美無的高價被一位大富豪買走。
